Summary of wrong VAR decisions in first October matchweek

Premier League

In the Premier League match between Tottenham and Liverpool on September 30, 2023, Luis Diaz’s goal was incorrectly ruled out for offside by the on-pitch officials and VAR did not overrule the decision, with no lines shown on the replays. Diaz met a through ball from Mohamed Salah and scored to put Liverpool ahead in the 34th minute, but the assistant referee put up his flag for offside. After a very brief check by the VAR team, play was allowed to resume, even though television replays clearly showed that Diaz was onside when Salah had played the pass. The PGMOL admitted that a significant human error occurred during the first half of Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool. The goal by Luiz Diaz was disallowed for offside by the on-field team of match officials. This was a clear and obvious factual error and should have resulted in the goal being awarded through VAR intervention, however, the VAR failed to intervene. PGMOL will conduct a full review into the circumstances which led to the error.

Liverpool therefore receives one more point, while Tottenham is loosing two points.

La Liga

In the match between Real Madrid and GironaJude Bellingham clearly played the ball with its hand in the box. He was literally blocking it, which should have resulted in a penalty for Girona. It wasn’t called by the referee on the pitch and there was no VAR intervention. Real Madrid won the match with three goals ahead anyway, resulting in no difference on the True Table.

There were least two major mistakes, resulting only in changes for Liverpool and Tottenham.
